Any Detail Looks Like Evidence
Students quote the text but cannot tell whether the detail is relevant or strong enough to support the claim.
When students can name the claim but treat every detail as proof, argument analysis quickly falls apart. Give them a repeatable way to test the reasoning, evidence, and strength of a text.
“Evaluate the argument” is a large instruction. Students need to see the smaller decisions hidden inside it.

They decide an argument is strong because they agree with it—not because the reasoning holds together.
Students write “the argument is weak” but cannot identify the unsupported claim, flawed reasoning, or irrelevant evidence.
Use the same thinking path every time so students know what to find, test, and explain.
What is the author’s main claim?
What reasons does the author give?
What facts, examples, data, or details support those reasons?
Is the reasoning sound? Is the evidence relevant and sufficient?
How strong is the argument overall, and why?
The rigor grows across middle school: sixth graders distinguish supported claims from unsupported ones; seventh graders assess sound reasoning and relevant, sufficient evidence; eighth graders also recognize irrelevant evidence. The P.R.O.V.E.™ routine stays consistent while the thinking deepens.

Use one short, high-interest argument and make the quality of the thinking more important than the number of questions completed.
Think aloud through P.R.O.V.E.™ and show why a detail can be true but still fail to support the claim.
Place one strong and one weak piece of evidence beside the same claim. Ask which one proves more—and why.
Have students evaluate one argument independently and mark the exact point where the reasoning succeeds or breaks down.
Use one exit response: “This argument is strong or weak because the evidence is ___ and the reasoning is ___.”
Instead of asking, “Do you agree?” ask, “Would this evidence still support the claim if you disagreed with the author?”
Choose standards-specific practice that keeps the claim, reasons, evidence, reasoning, and final evaluation at the center of the lesson.
Help students trace an argument and distinguish claims supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not supported.

You do not need another vague strategy. You need a process you can model, repeat, and use in tomorrow’s lesson.
Students identify the claim, trace the reasons and evidence, test whether the reasoning is sound, and judge how well the support proves the claim.
The claim is what the author wants the reader to believe. Reasons explain why the claim should be accepted. Evidence provides facts, data, examples, or details that support those reasons.
Ask two separate questions: “Does this evidence directly connect to the claim?” and “Is there enough strong evidence to justify the conclusion?” Relevant evidence fits; sufficient evidence provides enough support.
The middle school informational-text standards are RI.6.8, RI.7.8, and RI.8.8. Expectations progress from distinguishing supported claims to evaluating sound reasoning, relevant and sufficient evidence, and irrelevant evidence.
Use one repeatable routine, short argument texts, color-coded claim-and-evidence marking, visible prompts, and fewer decisions at a time. Reduce processing overload without lowering the thinking expectation.
