Any Statement Looks Like a Claim
Students confuse the topic, the author’s opinion, and the actual position the argument is trying to prove.
When students can identify the topic but treat every opinion as a claim and every detail as evidence, argument analysis falls apart. Give them a repeatable way to trace the argument, test the reasoning, and judge the support.
“Evaluate the argument” hides several decisions inside one direction. Students need to see each decision before they can make a defensible judgment.

A detail may be true or interesting without being relevant—or strong enough—to support the claim.
Students call an argument strong because they agree with it instead of testing its reasoning and evidence.
Use the same five-part thinking path until students can separate the argument’s parts and evaluate how well those parts work together.
What is the author’s central claim or main point?
What reasons does the author give for accepting the claim?
What facts, examples, data, quotations, or details support those reasons?
Is the reasoning sound? Is the evidence relevant and sufficient?
How strong is the argument overall, and what specifically makes it strong or weak?
The same argument-analysis foundation continues across middle school, but the required judgment becomes more precise.
Sixth graders trace the argument and specific claims, then distinguish claims supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not supported.
Seventh graders trace and evaluate the argument while assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient.
Eighth graders delineate and evaluate the argument, assess reasoning and evidence, and recognize when irrelevant evidence is introduced.
Credibility, bias, counterarguments, and source evaluation are valuable supporting skills, but they should not replace the specific work named in RI.6.8–RI.8.8: claims, reasons, sound reasoning, relevant and sufficient evidence, and irrelevant evidence.
Identifying a claim and highlighting evidence is only the beginning. Students must decide whether the support actually earns the conclusion.
A detail can connect to the claim and still be too limited to prove it. Students need to ask whether there is enough support.
A fact can be accurate but irrelevant. Students must explain how the evidence supports the specific reason or claim.
Strong wording and emotional examples can sound convincing even when the reasoning contains gaps.
Use a hypothetical claim so students can concentrate on the reasoning instead of debating whether they like the topic.
The school should add an outdoor lunch area because it would improve the lunch experience.
Point: The author claims an outdoor lunch area would improve lunch.
Reasons: Students want the option, and it may reduce indoor crowding.
Observe: Evidence A shows interest. Evidence B provides stronger operational evidence. Evidence C is irrelevant.
Verify: The reasoning is mostly sound, and the first two details are relevant. The pilot evidence is stronger because it measures an actual result.
Evaluate: The argument is reasonably strong but would be more sufficient with information about supervision, weather, cost, and whether the pilot result continued over time.
Ask: “If you disagreed with the claim, what evidence would still force you to take the argument seriously?” Students must evaluate the quality of the support instead of reporting their preference.
Use one short, high-interest argument. Make the quality of the thinking more important than the number of questions completed.
Think aloud through P.R.O.V.E.™. Show why a detail can be true but still fail to support the claim.
Place one strong and one weak piece of evidence beside the same claim. Ask which one proves more—and why.
Have students evaluate one short argument and mark the exact place where the reasoning succeeds or breaks down.
Use one exit response: “This argument is strong or weak because the evidence is ___ and the reasoning is ___.”
Do not ask students to evaluate the entire argument at once. Reveal one P.R.O.V.E.™ decision at a time, then combine the decisions into an overall judgment.

P.R.O.V.E.™ turns “evaluate the argument” from one overwhelming instruction into a routine teachers can model and students can repeat.
Students identify or delineate the argument and its claims, trace the reasons and evidence, then judge whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence adequately supports the claims.
The claim is the position the author wants the reader to accept. A reason explains why the claim should be accepted. Evidence supplies facts, data, examples, quotations, or details that support the reason or claim.
Relevant evidence directly connects to the claim. Sufficient evidence provides enough support to justify the conclusion. Evidence can be relevant without being sufficient.
Ask students to evaluate the same argument from the perspective of someone who disagrees. Require them to name the strongest evidence, weakest evidence, and any gap in reasoning before giving an overall judgment.
RI.6.8, RI.7.8, and RI.8.8 form the main informational-reading progression. The rigor develops from distinguishing supported and unsupported claims to assessing sound reasoning, relevant and sufficient evidence, and irrelevant evidence.
Use one short argument, reveal one P.R.O.V.E.™ step at a time, color-code claims and evidence, compare one strong and one weak example, and delay the overall judgment until the parts have been analyzed.
