Model the same sequence until students can use it independently with fiction and informational text.

State what the clue suggests using relevant context or background knowledge.
Answer what the reader can reasonably conclude even though the text does not state it directly.
Return to the strongest evidence and explain why it supports the inference.

Read a short section aloud and think through all four steps. Name the clue, connection, inference, and evidence.
Ask students to identify the clue first. Do not accept an inference until they show where it began.
Give students one focused passage and require a complete evidence-based explanation.
Use an exit response: “My inference is ___ because the text shows ___.”

Require students to identify the clue before stating the inference. Then ask them to explain how that clue supports the conclusion.
Use one repeatable routine, short passages, visible sentence stems, and fewer questions at a time. Reduce processing overload without lowering the reading expectation.
