How to Teach Inferencing in Middle School Without the Guessing

When “I Get It” Turns Into “I Don’t Get It”

Teach Inferencing as Four Visible Steps

Model the same sequence until students can use it independently with fiction and informational text.

Find the Clue

Identify the detail, action, description, or word choice that matters.

Explain the Connection

State what the clue suggests using relevant context or background knowledge.

Form the Inference

Answer what the reader can reasonably conclude even though the text does not state it directly.

Prove the Answer

Return to the strongest evidence and explain why it supports the inference.

  • Locate relevant textual clues
  • Combine clues with appropriate background knowledge
  • Infer character feelings, motivation, and decisions
  • Infer relationships, causes, and unstated ideas
  • Decide whether an inference is reasonable
  • Select evidence that supports the conclusion
  • Explain the clue-to-inference connection

Common Core Inferencing Progression in Grades 6–8

Inferencing is embedded in both literature and informational-text evidence standards. The progression changes the amount and strength of evidence students must use.

Grade 6

Cite textual evidence to support inferences drawn from literature and informational text.

Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support inferences drawn from both text types.

Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports inferences drawn from each text.

Sentence Stems That Slow the Thinking Down

  • “I noticed that the text says…”
  • “This detail suggests…”
  • “I can infer that…”
  • “The strongest evidence is…”

A Simple Middle School Inferencing Lesson

Use one short passage and repeat the routine instead of overwhelming students with multiple strategies at once.

Model: 5–7 Minutes

Read a short section aloud and think through all four steps. Name the clue, connection, inference, and evidence.

Practice Together: 10 Minutes

Ask students to identify the clue first. Do not accept an inference until they show where it began.

Practice Independently: 15 Minutes

Give students one focused passage and require a complete evidence-based explanation.

Check the Thinking: 5 Minutes

Use an exit response: “My inference is ___ because the text shows ___.”
