The Treasure of Lemon Brown No-Prep Vocabulary Development works great for sub-plans and expanding vocabulary practice with high-level learning methods (creating your own sentence and branching out to make word associations with definitions). It also includes a word search to familiarize students with the spelling of the vocabulary words and a crossword to support a challenge.

There are 4 pages for students, which include:

• two pages of vocabulary create your own sentence and find synonym practice

• one word search

• one crossword puzzle

I use crossword puzzles as a low-grade assignment or extra credit depending on the type of class/students. The word search and crossword puzzle have an answer key.

I found allowing 10 minutes in class to work on vocabulary before you begin reading a novel or short story really helps students get familiar with words they may not be familiar with in our everyday language. This is important if you are working with kiddos who need additional vocabulary support. It also incentives them to complete simple activities that help build their knowledge without using memorization. As well all know, memorization is the lowest level of learning, and none of us want that.
